Frida Kahlo, a fiery figure of Mexican Surrealism, was born in a country she deliberately chose to associate with the Revolution, even going so far as to change her date of birth from July 6, 1907, to the fictitious July 7, 1910. By doing so, she decided to link her arrival into the world with the powerful, liberating insurrectionary movement. When André Breton discovered her work, he recognized in it the “magical reality” he had come to seek in Mexico and described Frida as “a ribbon around a bomb.”...​
